Researchers have found that people oblivious to the haunting phenomena when they first enter the haunted site are likely to pick up something in the same spots in the house as the primary witnesses who reported the haunting. This indicates that something actually exists in the environment at those spots on some level, physical or psychic.

Ghost Hunting: How to Investigate the Paranormal
Curiously, ghosts are rarely if ever seen in the nude. They appear fully clothed, and may even change clothing on subsequent appearances. They may change their form, to appear as they looked at different stages of their lives. Unless someone out there knows of an extoplasmic department store on the spiritual plane, we have to wonder, "Where do the clothes and accessories come from?"

You might think of a haunting as a loop of video or audio tape playing itself over and over for you to watch. Trying to interact with it would be akin to trying to interact with a show on your TV: sure, you can turn it off or change the channel, but I wouldn't expect the actors to suddenly stop and talk to you directly.

The fact is, that none of the technology that anyone uses, myself included, can be shown to detect anything paranormal. Certainly not any better than human beings. The equipment is not a detector of the paranormal, it's a detection of what's happening in the environment and, technically, can be detectors of anomalies or an unusual effect in the environment, which you must connect to a human experience. I can just walk into an old abandoned house and get an EMF reading that's off the map. You know, pipes do that, wiring. I gotta tell ya, I've probably found more bad wiring in those older homes than I've ever found ghosts. I think I've recommended electricians multiple times over saying "you have a ghost here" certainly.

Apparitions are often confused with hauntings. The difference is that apparitions are "live" (intelligent consciousness) and hauntings are "recordings."
