Statistics and data about the importance of connections can only go so far in convincing us to make our relationships strong and vibrant. There is a more urgent wisdom that comes from our hearts: a realization that something has gone missing; a longing for the attachments that make life rich and full.

Optimism is joyful searching; pessimism is a prison of fear and a clutching at illusionary safety.

When we open our hearts to each other we allow grace to enter. It is as simple as that. And suffering--events that break open the heart--can become the refiner's fire that leaves us fully open to the truth about love and compassion.

The opportunity for love is ever-present, and in every place; its manifestation relies only on free will, on our decision at any given moment to receive a gift from a loving universe.

Ordinary Grace

You may realize that, in response to obligations and pressures on your time, you've retreated, cutting out the very heart of what makes life precious. So, knowing this, you begin to make changes. You begin to build your safe harbor, find your pack. You not only reach out, you allow yourself to be found by others. You open your heart, your home, your life to those who mean something to you. You begin to turn your life around. You howl. Your house becomes a home where friends are welcomed, and laughter and loving permeate your very soul. You may suddenly realize that your life is in your own hands, and that it is you--and you alone--who will determine your priorities.

My life is blessed by the sure and strong containment of a biological family that loves and embraces me. I realize that not everyone is so lucky. Perhaps you come from a small family, separated by great distances. Maybe your family is not emotionally close even if they live in the same town. Regardless of your particular circumstances, your need for inclusion, for feeling loved and held by the sense of family is no less than mine. If you weren't born into these connections, then you must make them.
