I find it ironic that the same sense of gang loyalty is forgotten when a gangster ends up in the hospital, locked up in prison, or 6 feet under in a coffin. Are the "brothers" paying for the hospital bills, visiting them in prison every week, putting money on their books, accepting those long distance phone calls or paying for the funeral expenses? Look at history and that sense of loyalty is not what it's made out to be.

To me, loyalty is ethical in and of itself. When we act out of a duty to loyalty we feel like our actions are ethical or moral even if they would conflict with what society prescribes as ethical.

I don't care a damn about men who are loyal to the people who pay them, to organizations ... I don't think even my country means all that much. There are many countries in our blood, aren't there, but only one person. Would the world be in the mess it is if we were loyal to love and not to countries?
GRAHAM GREENE

Loyalty is dead, the experts proclaim, and the statistics seem to bear them out. On average, U.S. corporations now lose half their customers in five years, half their employees in four, and half their investors in less than one. We seem to face a future in which the only business relationships will be opportunistic transactions between virtual strangers.
FREDERICK F. REICHHELD
The Loyalty Effect
The loyalty response is staying committed to a relationship despite differences. Loyalty involves hoping that things will get better on their own. Loyalty is silent allegiance, so it is passive. Because loyalty doesn't end a relationship and preserves the option of addressing tension later, loyalty can be constructive. However, loyalty may result in the partner who expresses it feeling ignored and unappreciated.

Our earliest ancestors probably learned that loyalty was a valuable survival tool. In the jungle, the desert, or the open plains, loyalty to your tribe increased your chances of surviving harsh weather and an unreliable supply of food and water.

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it.
