quotations about Valentine's Day
On Valentine's Day, the Spirit Club plastered the school with red streamers and pink balloons and red and pink hearts. It looked like Clifford the Big Red Dog ate a flock of flamingoes and then barfed his guts up.

At its poisoned little root, Valentine's Day is nothing more than a day of begrudging obligation dressing itself in a red velvet suit and doing its smarmy best to wander around starting some shit.

Valentine's Day is here again, and like most unattached women in the United States, I'm filled with a vague sense of panic, fear and dread. What was meant to be a holiday to express your love for the one you care about has now become (a) a contest between coworkers for who can get the best flower arrangement delivered to their office, (b) a month-long guilt session from one half of an unsatisfied couple to the other, using the holiday as an excuse to vent their anger for being in a loveless relationship, (c) one more occasion for single men to skirt the constant badgering for a commitment ... or (d) a day-long seminar on depression where women sit at home alone, over-eating, watching must-see-TV, wondering if they will ever find someone to love and honor and cherish them and save them from the horrible fate of becoming the dreaded "old maid."

For some, Valentine's Day is a reminder that "no one loves me." Painful memories spring to the surface, those that have been kept inside for so long, the anguish they cause feels "normal." I've been in all of those situations. My memories of grade school are both whimsical and hurtful. The pretty little girl in the desk next to mine received the cure card that said, "Will You Be Mine?" and a heart-shaped lollipop, while I received the generic card with a picture of an owl asking, "Whoooo will be my Valentine?" Apparently the little girl in the seat next to mine was special and I was ordinary.

Oft have I heard both youths and virgins say,
Birds choose their mates and couple too this day:
But by their flight I never can divine
When I shall couple with my valentine.

If you're single, it's so easy to get caught up in all of the romantic fanfare that is Valentine's Day. And instead of waiting for Mr. Right, we settle for Mr. Right-Now -- or Mr. Good-Enough-Bar.

Is it more important to love ... or to be loved? Valentine's Day is the occasion when you can experience both.

Ideas Save Valentine's Day
When I hear people complain about being single on Valentine's Day, I always want to tell them that they're not missing out on anything and that it's just like Feb. 13 and 15. Because they're not, and it is. If it really is a big deal to you, make the day about celebrating you instead of allowing yourself to feel bad.

We're now less than a week away from V-Day. Valentine's Day is a test. It's a test of your commitment, your preparedness, a test of whether you love someone enough to waste $100 on flowers that on any other day of the year would cost you $30.

When it comes to Valentine's Day, guys are smart. They know what's going on and that's why, for them, it's a day of fear. Guys have somehow evolved to the point where they are now able to cut through the emotional bullshit of the day to the truth--that Valentine's Day is all about doing the "right thing" so no one yells at you. To keep out of trouble they buy the over-priced flowers, the heart-shaped goodies and the weekends away. Everyone's happy. And the day over, they can breathe a sigh of relief.

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day! Which means in 24 hours, guys all across the country will be telling their loved ones, "I thought you said we weren't doing gifts this year."

Valentine's Day is certainly a happy occasion for many. An opportunity to spend a day with that special someone or, for some, someones. A time to generate more memories, show your love or feel loved. But for others, it's anything but ... even if you are in a relationship. For a number of people, the commercially designated day of love can actually cause stress, anxiety, unhappiness and even depression.

Valentine's Day is just a week away. Hold on until the big day, then stuff him with sugar. Maybe an overdose of high-glycemic goodies can help him see the light.

The bodegas of New York must put in some kind of incredible order the week before Valentine's Day, because flower offerings that normally consist of a couple wilting carnations suddenly rival the displays on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens.

I am not so curmudgeonly as to suggest that Valentine's Day is a waste of time -- although I do tend to think that most occasions you are instructed to enjoy by the greetings card industry tend not to live up to the occasion, simply by dint of the hype with which they come burdened. For those in a relationship who possess sufficient imagination and sensitivity to come up with the "right" gesture (a box of chocolates and a bunch of roses doesn't really cut the ice any more), it can be a touching occasion, even if it is devalued by being compulsory. But in truth, it's often a disappointment -- and that's for those who actually have, or receive, a Valentine.

Ultimately, I have been hearing more and more encouraging stories about couples that have come to their senses and decided to mutually abolish the tyranny of the Valentine's Day oppressors. These are people who grasp the concept that love is for everyday, and they won't be made fools of for the benefit of some dopey corporation's bottom line.

Don't want company on Valentine's Day? That's allowed, too, and perfectly fine. Be your very own Valentine. Light candles, run a bath, get the bubbles. Snuggle up with a favorite book, magazines, and a glass of wine. Relax. Sleep in. Buy yourself a gift. Do whatever it is that makes you feel good. You deserve to be well cared for and pampered. Who says you can't be the one to do the pampering?
